New Improved Nurture® for enhanced digestive comfort
1. What has changed?
- Nurture formulas have been improved to encourage more digestive comfort.
How? By improving the protein composition and adding prebiotics, as well as improving the blend of existing ingredients. The new and improved infant formulas are:- Nurture Starter™
- Nurture Gold Starter™
- Nurture Plus Gold™
- Nurture Follow-On®
- Nurture Gold Follow-On®
- Protein: Nurture Gold Starter™ now contains added alpha-lactalbumin; an easily digested whey protein which is found in breast milk.
Nurture Follow-On® and Nurture Gold Follow-On® now contain more whey protein, and less total protein for easier digestion. - Prebiotics: Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are a non-digestible carbohydrate naturally found in breast milk.
GOS has been added to Nurture Gold Starter™ and Nurture Gold Follow-On® to encourage softer, more regular bowel motions and a gut flora more similar to breastfed babies. - In addition, the oil blend and nucleotide blend have been improved across the entire Nurture® range which aid digestion and encourage softer bowel motions.
- Note: Nurture Toddler® and Nurture Gold™ Toddler will be available in the new look design, but the formulation is not changing.
2. Will my baby notice any differences with the improved formula?
- Dietary changes including changing or introducing a new formula require a period of adjustment for babies, as their immature digestive system gets used to the change.
- It's not uncommon for babies to take time to adjust to any dietary changes such as a change in formula. Most will settle in a few days, while some may take a bit longer.
- Minor symptoms that sometimes occur with dietary changes include a change in bowel habits (e.g. looser or more frequent stools, firmer or less regular stools, and changes in colour) and changes in digestion e.g. more wind or spilling. These symptoms are usually minor and temporary and resolve within a few days as baby adjusts to the new formula.
- The flavour of the improved formula will be slightly different. Most babies won't notice the slight change in taste. Generally babies adjust to changes in flavour within a few days as they become more familiar with the formula.
3. What is the best way to change my baby from the current formula to the new improved formula?
- Make sure you have enough of baby's previous Nurture® formula on hand (approximately 1 week's worth) so you can make the change to the new formula gradually.
- To help baby adjust more smoothly to a new formula, here are some tips:
- If unsure about which formula to use, please talk to your health professional, or call the Nurture Careline 0800 55 66 66 for advice.
- Introduce the new formula gradually and avoid changing completely to a new formula within one day. Introduce during the day, rather than at night, so if baby does react to the formula, you will be awake to observe.
- It can help to offer just one bottle (or cup) of the new formula on the first day of changeover. Try to make sure you have some of baby's previous formula left so that you can use this for the remaining feeds. Offer two bottles of the new formula on day two, and continue this method until baby has made the full transition to the new formula. This could take up to a week.
- Another method is to mix the two formulas together for several days before you introduce just the new formula. Make sure you use 50 mL water for every level scoop of formula powder to ensure the dilution of the product remains correct.
- If baby is trying formula for the first time (e.g. has been fully breastfed) offer just a small amount of formula at first, for example 50mL, to make sure baby tolerates it before offering a full bottle.
- Always ensure that the new formula is a suitable choice for your baby. For example, if baby has an allergy to cows' milk protein, do not use a cows' milk based formula, and see your health professional for advice.
4. How will I know that the product I am buying is the new formulation?
- All of the new formulations will be available in the new look design (shown on the home page). They will also have a label on the lid advising you that the can contains the new and improved formulation.
- The new formulations will be available from June 2010.
- Please call the Nurture Careline on 0800 55 66 66, or talk to your health professional for more advice on changing or introducing formula.
